Cartoonist Bob Thaves once quipped, “I don’t know if I can live on my income or not—the government won’t let me try it.” This sentiment rings true for Kim Monson, President of the Colorado Union of Taxpayers, who recently stepped up to defend the interests of taxpayers everywhere.
Monson strongly opposed a series of proposed tax increases that she argues are unsustainable and show a lack of compassion for hard-working Coloradans. These tax hikes include $1.9 billion in new debt (estimated repayment cost) for Denver Public Schools, a significant sales tax increase for affordable housing, and another sales tax increase requested by Denver Health to accommodate the rising demand for services, including those for individuals who have entered the country illegally.
In opposition to these proposals, Monson went head-to-head with Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, who is promoting the sales tax for government-subsidized housing; Donna Lynne, CEO of Denver Health, advocating for the sales tax increase for healthcare; and former Denver City Council President Albus Brooks, supporting the school debt initiative.
Monson emphasized, “The vast majority of Coloradans—whether moderate Democrats, Republicans, Unaffiliateds, or members of Minor Parties, Libertarians, and Conservatives—agree that now is not the time to saddle Denverites with more school debt and potentially one of the highest sales tax rates in the country. People are already tightening their belts due to inflation, rising food prices, and escalating energy costs caused by government policies.”
