CUT Opposes HB26-1301, Hospital Funding

CUT is not opposed to proper government spending, but CUT is opposed to wasteful spending. A large concern for CUT is the lack of a fiscal note detailing the cost of this bill. CUT is always concerned regarding new taxation. CUT acknowledges the seriousness of addiction. There is likely a nexus between marijuana and alcohol addiction and homelessness on the streets. More money is not the answer, the abuser must want to change their behavior. Until the abuser changes themselves, no amount of money will be the answer. Additionally, CUT suggests re-visiting the capacity of the State Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo and Colorado Mental Health Hospital at Ft. Logan. Currently they may be underutilized.

Bill HB26-1301 Summary

Concerning the taxation of certain harmful substances, and, in connection therewith, increasing the tax on the sale of malt liquors, vinous liquors, spiritous liquors, hard cider, and retail marijuana, dedicating that tax revenue first to the construction and operation of the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Aurora and then the operation of long-term civil commitment facilities in Mesa County, and authorizing the state to keep and spend the additional taxation revenue as a voter-approved revenue change.
